Since Roman times Chénérailles has been at an important crossroads in Central France, and as such it provides an excellent base for exploring the area by car or bicycle. It has an attractive medieval heart, once surrounded by stout walls, which was often fought over and besieged during the medieval wars which plagued the country. Aerial photographs clearly show the original oval-shaped settlement and moat. Within easy reach are the picturesque towns of Boussac, Mainsat, Chambon-sur-Voueize and Ahun - and the local beautifully-restored château of Villemonteix with its fairy-tale turrets and magnificent tapestries is a 'must-see'. Indeed there are so many châteaux round here that we have named La Grande Maison's bedrooms after them.

Aubusson, a town dedicated to the art of tapestry, is a 20-minute drive away, and its rabbit-warren of medieval streets, museums, exhibitions and workshops offers the visitor a fascinating day out. Moutier d'Ahun, an ancient village with an abbey and a 12th century bridge over the River Creuse, is a delight for photographers.

There are excellent facilities nearby for those who like fishing and golf, and the Creuse department is a walker's paradise with countless footpaths criss-crossing the area, threading through sleepy rural hamlets and dotted with ancient stone monuments. The country lanes are refreshingly free of traffic, except for the occasional tractor, so they are ideal for cycling or walking holidays.

For those wishing to visit friends and family in the vicinity - whilst enjoying the hospitality of informal bed and breakfast accommodation, rather than a hotel - La Grande Maison is also handily-placed for St Dizier la Tour, Parsac, Gouzon, St Chabrais, Peyrat-la-Nonière, Issoudun Létrieix, St-Pardoux-les-Cards, Lavaveix les Mines, Cressat and Jarnages.

At La Grande Maison, the personal touch is all-important to us. It is very satisfying to have transformed our large town house into a chambres d'hôte, installing modern conveniences whilst retaining its original character. By prior arrangement, we are delighted to serve our guests a mouth-watering four-course evening meal using our own homegrown vegetables and local produce where possible. Cooked 'English' breakfasts can also be provided if required.
