La Grande Maison is situated in the centre of Chénérailles, in the Creuse Département which is in the north-west third of the Limousin Region.
Travelling by Road
Coming from the North the fastest way to get to the chambres d'hôte is to travel down the A20 (free) motorway, part of the main route from Orléans to Toulouse, to Junction 23 taking the N145 dual carriageway towards and past Guéret to the junction 45 for Aubusson, Jarnages and Chénérailles. Join the D990 and pass through Jarnages and Cressat to Chénérailles.
If you have a few minutes to spare, stop at the Aire du Monts de Guéret, which is just before Guéret on the N145. We think it is one of the most attractive service areas we have ever visited. In the main building, as well as the usual things, you will find an delightful exhibition area with displays about the Creuse and lots of tourist information. It will also give an opportunity to pick up free visitor's passport which entitles you to reduced admission charges at a number of the major sites in the Creuse, after you have paid the normal admission charge at the first site you visit.
If you prefer the pretty way for the latter part of the journey leave the A20 at Junction 20 (Châteauroux North) and follow the signs to La Châtre. If you have time to spare you could visit the home of the author George Sand, the lover of Chopin, at Nohant on the way past - she is also associated with the château at Boussac. At La Châtre take the D940 towards Guéret. A couple of kilometres after Genouillac take the left turn onto the D990 to Châtelus-Malvaleix. Pass through Châtelus-Malvaleix - look out for the speed bumps - and follow it over the N145 through Jarnages and Cressat to Chénérailles.
Travelling by Air
Limoges airport is only one and half hour's drive away and is expanding its services rapidly. At the time of writing there were services from Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, London and Southampton. Car hire is available at the airport. Click on the link for the up-to-date information.
From the airport, follow the signs to the A20 motorway and join it heading North in the direction of Orleans and Paris. Leave the A20 at Junction 23 taking the N145 dual carriageway in the direction of Guéret. This slip road must be unique as it is a single track road which must be around a kilometer long which then becomes the inside lane of the N145 a short distance before a speed camera. (Although this section of the N145 is to motorway standard and it is the main route from Portugal to Eastern Europe the speed limit is 110 kmph.) Continue past Guéret to junction 45 for Aubusson, Jarnages and Chénérailles. Join the D990 and pass through Jarnages and Cressat to Chénérailles.
